Martin Luther and his "95 Theses"
The year was 1517, and Martin Luther had written his “95 Theses”. This document brought to light the corruption of the Catholic Church. He felt the Church leaders were more secular than religious; they were more interested in money and power. One of the main things Martin Luther stood against was indulgences within the Catholic Church. Martin Luther was excommunicated from the church because of this, which means he was cut off from the church in all ways. Martin Luther wrote the document to highlight how the church was using pardons from the pope to get money from the people instead of trying to help them reach eternal salvation. “Every truly repentant Christian has a right to full remission of penalty and guilt, even without letters of pardon.” Martin Luther believed that money could not fix problems with God, but true sorrow and repentance could fix it.
